Have you set a goal repeatedly, again and again, only to lose motivation? This might be why…
How to Stay Motivated and Accomplish Your Goals
If you are having a hard time sticking with your goals, you likely haven’t developed the skill of habit development, and you are lacking the emotional drive connected to accomplishing your goals.
Stick with me for a second.
The brain LOVES familiarity. It likes doing things it has always done, because it feels safe. If you start to do something that stretches you, your brain will sound off an alarm and say, “wait! This isn’t what we have always done, come back!”
Unless you constantly feel what it feels like to be where you want to be, you will likely revert back to what you have always done. So you need to DAILY visualize that it has already happened, and how that feels.
It turns out those “cheesy affirmations” you hear people talk about are actually important!
EMOTIONS ARE KEY!
Everyday you need to connect with what it feels like to accomplish your goals in the NOW. Allow yourself to really feel it. Otherwise, you only feel the discomfort of stretching, and will desire to go back. But if you allow yourself to really visualize and feel what it feels like to reach your goal, your thoughts will start to transition to, “this feels good. I like being here.”
You have to be willing to sacrifice your current life for the life you want, and it takes practice. You have to define the new version of yourself.
Finally Accomplish Your Goals
I guess I should have titled this 2 Things that keep you from accomplishing your goals, because you also need to know the basics of how to form good habits (see our post for a lot of really good info on that). Once you have these two skills, you will be surprised at how much better you are at staying motivated and developing good habits.
As a final note, I would like to add that you absolutely need to come from a positive place when it comes to visualizing your accomplished goals. Rather than imaging that you have “lost all the weight,” imagine yourself with a healthy, energetic and strong body. Feel the difference? Rather than focusing on getting rid of something (which is what our society is so good at), focus on what you will gain and how that feels.
